PRLog (Press Release) – Jul 17, 2011 – The new India Power Report from BMI forecasts that the country's power consumption is expected to rise from 685TWh in 2010 to 1,327TWh by the end of the forecast period, representing average annual growth of 6.8% in 2011-2020. After power industry usage and system losses, we see a surplus supply rising from the estimated 198TWh level seen in 2010 to 343TWh by 2020, assuming 6.6% average annual growth in power generation during the period.

Indian power generation in 2010 is put by BMI at 883TWh, havi rc helicopter market place ng risen 6.6% from the 2009 level. BMI is forecasting an average 6.4% annual increase to 1,203TWh between 2011 and 2015. Thermal generation, comprising coal, gas and oil, is exp Kenmore Bisque 15 inchi ected to grow by 5.6% per annum during the period to 2015, but growth looks set to accelerate later in the decade.

We expect gas-fired power generation to climb 16.7% per annum between 2011 and 2015, with an average annual growth rate of 16.1% forecast to 2020. Gas-fired generation should therefore reach 169TWh by 2015 and almost 347TWh by 2020. The share of total Indian power generation should therefore increase from 8.8% to 14.0% by 2015, rising to 20.8% by 2020. Coal-fired generation will have accounted for 69.3% of the country's total generation in 2010, according to BMI estimates. We expect the fuel's market share to be 61.3% by 2015, firing a projected 737TWh. By 2020, coal's share of generation is forecast at 52.8%, representing 881TWh.

India is also actively promoting nuclear power as a clean and efficient source of electricity generation. Although it makes up only a small fraction of India's current installed generating capacity, many of the major developments taking place in the Indian electricity sector recently involve nuclear power. Independent sources forecast that India will add up to 11GW of new nuclear energy capacity by 2020. BMI estimates that 2010 nuclear power generation was 18TWh, and is set to rise sharply to 53TWh by 2015. The share of generation is forecast to rise from 2.0% to 4.4% by 2015, then reach 6.8% by 2020.

India is ranked equal fourth alongside Vietnam in BMI's updated Power Business Environment Ratings, due to its vast market size and excellent growth prospects. The gap between India and China (in third place) is five points. While China is expected eventually to pull away and challenge Australia at the top of the table, India may be able to catch Japan (second place) during the next several quarters. Country risk factors offset some of the industry's strength, but the country seems destined over the longer term to shadow China near the top of the table.
